Analysis Of 3 Photographers

 Ansel Adams    1902 - 1984

Category of photograph: He shows main interest in; Scenery, Nature and Landscape.
Purpose: His pictures are predominantly artistic based which means these pictures are used for things such as; Calenders, Postcards, National parks art and framed around people's houses.

Image analysis: This image shows a small busy village full of everything man-made (which defeats the object of nature.) And how small it is compared to the wide nature surrounding it.
Interpretation of meaning: This shows the amount of effort he is willing to put in. Climbing up mountains with a good quality, heavy camera. Which means he has a real passion for capturing the best moments of nature that he can.

Image analysis: The picture is quite clever as it shows that the natural mountain, blurred into the background, overpowering the smaller, man-made houses clearly shown in the foreground.
Interpretation of meaning: The use of man-made creations emphasises how belittled humans are compared to nature. It is shown through the contrast in height and size.

Image analysis: All of Adams' photography style is black and white. He uses very fine focusing/grain and detail for the effect. He would use a large format camera for the best pictures possible. These pictures convey the power of mother nature and how nature will always be greater than human beings. Here, the sky is shown to be infinite. However, there is a definite end the man-made road.
Interpretation of meaning: A lot of his pictures represent religious aspects including Heaven and Earth. There is also a suggestion of Nature V Humanity. The natural beauty of nature is portrayed through the black and white theme, no photo shop needed.

Rankin - 1966

Category: All Portrait and fashion photographer.
Purpose: Rankin does glamorous photo shoots for people and professional photography for celebrities. For magazine covers or a photo shoot for a movie or advertisement. There are usually only few people (usually one) in his pictures, mainly focusing on the one person. Most pictures will be taken in a studio and added to a photo shopped background.

Image analysis: This image is a close up of Florence's face, hair and hands. Make-up has been applied to make her look her best. Additionally, it has been heavily photo shopped to advance extreme glamour.
Interpretation of meaning: She is posing in a serious way to show this is not a regular, casual photograph. But one that anyone in the world can see if searched on the internet for instance or in a public place. This is for dramatic effect and fame.

Image Analysis:  In this picture, Rankin has used different effects to make Richard stand out against a fierce background. This photo will have been taken in front of a green-screen. Then heavily photo shopped, for a dramatic effect. The serious face emphasises the fire, to maybe resemble 'danger'.
Interpretation of meaning: This portrait photograph is to purposely make him look good and professional. As he is famous and needs official celebrity photographs for many purposes.

Image analysis: This photograph is a basic medium close up of Noel. It is simple, yet effective. He is dressed casually, portraying a normal look. However, it is a still recognisably professional and an official image of a star.
Interpretation of meaning: The basic meaning is to make Noel look good for the cover of Q magazine. By making them do different poses and using dissimilar effects - He makes them look at their best. Rankin's pictures of celebrities can be to advertise their upcoming movie, TV programme or in this case, album. It is his job to make them feel comfortable whilst taking the pictures then making them look as professional as possible.

Tom Jenkins

Category: All kinds of Sports photography. From Olympics to football games.
Purpose: To accompany written articles in a newspaper or magazine. To show success and bring life into the text so people can have a better image of the event. It also captures a memory for the player and the public. The public can remember these moments or catch a glimpse of what they may have missed out on. These pictures can be sentimental for the players themselves and fans.

Image analysis: This photo is taken in the moment of the event. We can see that the photographer has jumped down to get behind Johnny Wilkinson. It takes a good photographer to build up the courage and put them self at risk for a quality photograph. It is taken in a high aperture and long depth field. The symmetrical effect of people's hands on either side create a good effect, making Wilkinson centre of attention.
Interpretation of meaning: He has just won a game and is in celebration. He is showing pride victory and the supporters want to touch his hand. This represents his fame and admiration.

Image analysis: This is a sharp focus because you can see all the small grains of confetti and the writing in the background is fairly clear. Also this is fast shutter speed, to capture the full moment of celebration at it's best. The light is behind the subject creating an interesting light effect causing the man to be shadow-like. He is holding the trophy with pride and celebrating his achievement.
Interpretation of meaning: This image portrays pride. He has clearly won, and is proud. There are other people around also celebrating in the moment.

Image analysis: This image is of the 2012 Olympic cyclists. It has been taken on slow shutter speed, to show motion and how fast he are realistically going. It will have been taken in two shots; the first shot being slow shutter speed to capture the movement of the cyclists. Followed by the second shot with a flash to capture the cyclists like a regular photograph. Also the motion effect is advanced by the strike-through wave surrounding the picture.
Interpretation of meaning: This is an 'in the moment' picture of the cyclist on the track. Which shows everything the cyclist has to offer in just one picture. It says everything about what he is capable of and what he does.

Image analysis: This picture is to show Usain Bolt's success at the 2012 London Olympics, when he won the 100m race and broke the world record. It shows how he is better than the other racers in the background. The way it has been taken shows power and success. It shows the amount of adrenaline in his body. His is a lot forward and clearer than the rest of the contestants who are more so blurred, to emphasise how fast he is sprinting.
Interpretation of meaning:   He quite clearly looks like a champion who is more powerful than anyone else. His facial expression and arm gesture shows how he is celebrating his success.
